I remember as a young boy whenever we would visit the grandparents we were told not to wander too far from the backyard. my Dads parents lived in Conway Close right next to the airfield. Mum and Dad would tell us stories of the way it was during the war. Facinating stories now but probably very scary at the time.

This is a very partial account which does not give sufficient weight to (a) the work done by Nuffield prior to the Battle (b) or his Civilian Repair Organisation - which returned damaged and repaired fighters Hurricanes (the majority of the Battle planes) and Spitfires to service to fight alongside the new fighters delivered from the factories, the split was about 50/50 (c) the testimony of Ernest Hives the Chairman of Rolls Royce responsible for Merlin production (d) the fact that Beaverbrook was removed when it was realised that he was as much a liability in the medium and long term as he was a short term asset, as the Lord President (Chamberlain) then looking after the Home Front at Churchill's request acknowledged to the Newspaperman in a letter. For the general impression that Beaverbrook was somehow reponsible for the Victory we have to thank Churchill's and A J P Taylor's propaganda on Beaverbrook's behalf which, while understandable in the wartime context, do not stand up to close scrutiny

Having just read Juliet Gardiners book titled "THE BLITZ" i could not help but wonder how many enemy aircraft were brought down and have obtained a wonderful account of the activity of the RAF.
Thank you
